Smith & Porter is seeking an energetic Front of House Manager for our downtown restaurant. Smith & Porter's goal is to make every meal with culinary creativity. We feature high quality, locally sourced ingredients. Smith & Porter offers a modern dining experience in a casual setting. Our restaurant is just steps from countless attractions including the Stone Arch Bridge, Gold Medal Park, Saint Anthony Falls, The Guthrie Theater, The Armory, US Bank Stadium and other local attractions.


We are looking for team members to  deliver excellent customer service to make Smith & Porter the best place to work and a dining destination in Downtown Minneapolis.


Smith & Porter is re-opening to the public in May 2022. We are comprised of a full-service restaurant, bar and café, catering services, and a private dining room, totaling 120-seats. 


Smith & Porter is located in Abiitan, an Ecumen senior community in the heart of the Mill City District of Downtown Minneapolis.  We also support The Terraces, Abiitan's Memory Care and Assisted Living residences, by providing dining services to those who live here.

The Front of House Manager is responsible for leading day-to-day operations of the restaurant in terms of the front of house staff, cafe staff and team members for the Assisted Living portion of Abiitan Mill City.  This position works in tandem with the Sous Chef for catering and menu needs.  This position is responsible for assisting with managing the labor operations within budget and to the highest levels of service.  Ensures excellent service in all front of house positions as it relates to food and beverage service.


Essential job responsibilities include:


  1. Provides exemplary service to our residents, families and guests, ensuring all feel welcome and are given responsive, friendly and courteous service.

  2. Works in conjunction with all members of the leadership team ensuring that we consistently demonstrate the responsible service and sale of alcohol and all required team members are properly trained.

  3. Stays current on the assisted living regulations for dining and holds team members accountable to these regulations.  Follows up on necessary training for team members.

  4. Manages front of the house restaurant and cafe team members and the dining team for the assisted living residents, holding them accountable to the policies and procedures of the department.

  5. Produces the staffing schedule, hires, supervises, trains and mentors front of house restaurant, cafe and Assisted living team members to maintain adequate staffing.

  6. Assists all workers and positions in the culinary department; identifies what needs to be done and assists as needed.

  7. Maintains a clean sanitary work area, complies with state and federal rules and regulations, and follows established policies, procedures and practices of the facility.


Front of House Manager

Minimum Required Qualifications: 

  • High School graduate or GED
  • Serv Safe Certified or equivalent and Certified Food Protection Manager or eligible within 30-days.
  • 1 year restaurant management experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and written
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Ability to follow all safety rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the facility including but not limited to:  Vulnerable Adult and Abuse Policy, HIPAA, Resident’s Bill of Rights, Universal Precaution, AWAIR, OSHA, Right to know, SDS, ADA, HUD Policy and Procedures, Fair Housing laws and regulations


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Management or similar
  • Previous experience in providing food service management to seniors
  • Previous experience in hospitality or healthcare
  • Previous experience in inventory control, food cost analysis, menu planning, event planning.
