The Blue Ocean Strategic Planning Intern will participate in research and workshop preparation related to Ecumen’s Blue Ocean strategic planning journey. Blue Ocean Strategy is a well-established methodology for considering the creation and capture of uncontested market space.


This internship will be both educational and practical with an opportunity to conduct industry research and help create workshop materials for Ecumen’s Executive Leadership team to utilize in various workshops. This position will provide a good understanding of the role that strategic planning and innovation plays within a complex, multi-site organization. The intern will also have opportunities to network with other areas within Ecumen’s corporate office and multi-site locations.


Essential job responsibilities include:


  1. Conduct research on forecasted industry trends for the next 3 to 5 years
  2. Create summary reports for executive leadership telling the story of the information found utilizing Infographics and other data visualization techniques
  3. Assist the Blue Ocean facilitator in preparing workshop materials based on the research findings.
  4. Research will include areas such as:
    a. Demographic trends
    b. Senior service related innovations
    c. Areas of competitive growth


While participating in the above stated projects, the Strategic Planning intern will learn the practical application of:

  • Working with senior leaders to create the tactics that bring long-term strategy to life
  • Learning how a Blue Ocean strategy process can help an organization pilot new initiatives and create new markets
  • Working in cross-functional teams on strategic ideation and decision making


Strategic Planning Intern

Minimum Required Qualifications:


  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate degree program with an interest and aptitude to work in strategic planning or innovation
  • Highly organized with the ability to prioritize tasks and handle numerous assignments simultaneously
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and internet applications
  • Ability to communicate effectively, including written and verbal skills
  • Work well, both individually and as part of a team, through respect, collaboration and dedication; and successfully interact with a diverse culture base
  • Enrolled in a Lutheran Educational Conference of North America (LECNA) School or have a connection to the ELCA. For example, an active member of an ELCA congregation or attending one of the following listed schools:
    • Concordia University
    • Augsburg College
    • St. Olaf College
    • Gustavus Adolphus College
    • Concordia College, Moorhead
